If you have, delete Newsrack from your iPhone and resync from your computer. This is assuming you updated via iPhone and not from the computer.

Only when I closed all the apps that were running did the camera snap again.

I think we were fine without multitasking. Apple should add an option for us to choose not to multitask.

1. Improved Camera

The shutter speed seems turbo charged and there is zoom! Well we can delete all those .99 cent camera apps we purchased now.

2. Video focus

You can now press to focus for videos now. No more blurry videos.

3. iBooks (or rather its potential)

The iBook store sucks. There are only Project Gutenberg books there. But the reading experience is divine.

4. Text Message Character Count

Now I solve the mystery of how I managed to send 700+ smses in a month after never exceeding 500 in ten years.

5. Folders!

Need I say more? The horrible cluttered mess can now be categorized. Perfect for neat freaks like me. Just press till they wiggle and pull one of top of another and they will be popped into a folder with a default name which you can then rename.

Worth the upgrade to iPhone OS 4? Absolutely. (How quickly I forget the nightmarish transit to get here…)

Device: iPhone 3GS with 32GB. 29GB of data.

Plan: Install OS 4.

Attempt 1: 1.5 hours to backup till halfway. Aborted due to exhaustion. It was 4am last night.

Attempt 2: Today at 5pm. At 645pm when we left for dinner, it was halfway. When we returned at 9pm (4 hours from start), it had a message “insufficient disk space for backup”.

Attempt 3: Spent rest of the evening uninstalling programs and copying data to shared drive. Have 9GB free space. Hope it is enough. Removed 17GB worth of data on iPhone. Hope it is enough. Started again, and is now running for 1/2 hour and 1cm worth of backup. This is midnight.

Other conditions: Turned on air conditioning as laptop is overheating and shut down twice already!

There have been some solutions posted that include deleting all the data in the phone. I don’t think it is worth the grief of me having to reinstall everything, especially all my data that cannot be backed up. This really reeks of a lack of usability testing and an obviously rushed out OS. There has been no response from Apple about this as far as I have looked.

Meanwhile I am going to shop around for an Android next. Apple seriously has me pissed off.

Update 3.15am: Decided to try deleting most of my videos and copying my photos to my hard drive through USB.

3.36am: Halfway through the back up now. Maybe there is some merit in deleting all that stuff. Will reinstall photos in a separate folder.

4.07am: Oh gosh, the back up is actually done. I mean it is all green now but still waiting on it to do something. So that 3 hours of deleting and backing up may have helped (I read some people took 10 hours to update their iPhone to OS 4 so that is a real and possible scenario). Let’s see what happens now.

4.11am: It is still a full green bar. Oh hang on. I see “Preparing iPhone for software update…” now.

4.16am: Updating firmware.

4.20am: Your iPhone has been updated. This message will self-destruct in 20 seconds.

4.22am: Ahh… done in just over an hour. My phone even vibrated to let me know. Now it is time to reinstall my videos and photos. If I am lucky, I can be tucked in bed by 5am (if none of the kids wake again).

Any day now, any day now I am going to replace this old Lenovo with something, anything running on Windows 7. Well, anything that is running on anything but Vista.

I think the last straw was the printer not working. Granted, I lost the installation CD because some benign night elf living in my study likes to move my stuff around for sheer entertainment purposes, but even the online installation file did not work. I have never had any printer NOT work with any computer.

If I had some kind of program like driveraccess at driveraccess.com to maybe find some kind of danged printer driver access that actually works with my laptop that would be great. Or… or… I could just throw in the dang towel, go shop around for a new laptop (since this one changes my date/time every day which means the motherboard is probably on the brink of death) tomorrow.

I lost my 8GB SD card recently. Hunted for it in my laptop, in the camera, in my secret compartment in my backpack, but alas, it was gone. There was only one place it could be now, and that was in my mother’s laptop, which I had used to copy some photos over for her. This story has a happy ending, thankfully, and that errant card was found in the SD card reader embedded in her Sony Vaio.

15 hours ago, I was lying in bed wondering what would have happened if I had dropped that card somewhere. I am normally extremely careful, thanks to an incident involving a lost $10 note as a child (30 years ago, $10 was probably worth around $100 these days). No, there were no incriminating photos on that card. Just family photos. Memories for me and mine only to share. Gone, if the card was truly gone.

Then I thought that I should start using usb encryption software to start encrypting all my stuff. Note to self: encrypt usb drive (all of them!), encrypt external drive, even encrypt flash drive. Gonna check out this USBCrypt encryption software which uses strong 128- and 256-bit AES encryption to protect my drives. Better safe than sorry.

It is cute, teaches anatomy in a fun and positive way, and it is beauty in its simplicity.

Jack loves it and loves showing it to everyone. He started playing it when he was 3 and even now at almost 4 he still plays it.

Here are some screenshots:
